Yesterday I bought a Mega Drive game that's missing majority of its contacts on one side (probably more than two thirds) but yet, the game still works perfectly. Out of interest, how many do you need to lose before the cartridge actually stops working?

Out of interest, how many do you need to lose before the cartridge actually stops working? Most games won't have a full row of contacts, they may look like they are missing but there is a good chance they were never there. The best way to clean the connector without damaging anything is to use a soft eraser, just like one of these suckers:

I see. I've always used rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Is that non-destructive?

I see. I've always used rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Is that non-destructive? Rubbing alcohol can cause further oxidation which will damage the connectors over time. An eraser will not.
