I've had this consistent problem with my N64 for a few years now, and I finally think it's time to fix it. If I haven't played my N64 for a while, the console will turn on but there will be no video or audio signal to the TV until I've reset, and reinserted the cartridge at least five or six times. After that, it works perfectly. And if I'm playing it consistently from day to day after that, the problem won't reemerge until the console hasn't been played for a while again (usually weeks).
Any ideas?

First question always has to be have you checked and cleaned the contacts on both the console and the carts?

I always clean the carts, but never the consoles contacts. Since it seems to work on the first time booting up if I'm playing the console regularly, wouldn't that rule out dirty contacts?

Oxidation of the contacts is to be expected from a 15+ year old console. What you can try to do to improve the connectivity of the contacts in the console is to get some very fine grit sandpaper (1500+) and gently rub it against the pins. This should remove some surface oxidation and grime.

If you never clean the consoles contacts, I would get a credit card and some felt (or if you have spare cloth that you use to clean glasses) and wrap the felt around the credit card, then "insert" the credit card and give it a clean.
Bit of alcohol on the cloth never hurts as well.
